This ritual is designed to give the initiate a pot to form the foundation of the initiate’s ancestral shrine. In traditional Ifa the first step in the process of communication with Spirit is the ability to enter dialogue with the ancestors of our biological lineage. Use of the Egun pot in conjunction with Oriki (invocations) and praise poems naming the ancestors of a person’s lineage is the foundation for effective communication with ancestors. Two types of Spirits communicate to us through this format. One is called ara Orun meaning a specific ancestor who has made the transition from Aye (Earth) to Orun (Heaven). The other is called Egun meaning the collective spirit of all the ancestors in a particular lineage. In conjunction with this initiation the initiate learns how to communicate with ancestors through the use of divination with four cowries and or obi obata. Copyright © 2009.
