Welcome to the Study Center of Yoruba Spiritual Traditions Calendar.  Traditional Yoruba culture marks time based on a four day week.  The Earth has eight major portals (Odu) that allow for the passage of Ase from the invisible realm (Orun) to the visible realm (Aye).  The configuration of these portals changes every four days effecting the Spiritual Forces that influence life on Earth.   In Ifa the new year is marked from the summer solistice a time when all eight portals are open bringing the Ase of Eji Ogbe from Orun to Aye.

Traditional African Awo invoke Ela every four days in their personal shrine to re-affirm the Ase that was released in their Ori during Tefa (initiation).  The use of the four day prayer cycle creates a spiderweb of Ase that supports the good fortune of the entire community.

Every sixteen days the members of Egbe Ifa meet to do divination for their extended family.  Every ninty-one days Egbe Ifa with the support of the entire community invokes good fortune for the season.

In Yoruba language the four day cycle is refered to as a five day cycle because the last day of the five days and the first day of the next five days is counted together making a four day interval in realm time.

This cycle is a bit confusing for those who were raised in a seven day week.  The Gregorian Calender based on the seven day week was created by the Catholic church to make it difficult for large groups of people to access the natural spiritual power that eminates from the Earth.   In my experience those communities that make collective use of the four day calender experience a positive shift in consciousness leading to an increase in good fortune.

The four day cycle is called Orun Ifa and the sixteen day cycle is called Itadogun Ifa.

Eku Odun

Yearly Divination from Ile Ife

June, 2007

The traditional Yoruba New Year begins in June.  The elders of Ile Ife do divination for all those who worship Ifa and Orisa at this time of the year.  On June 3, 2007 the elders of the Awoni  the diviners for the Oni of Ile Ife cast the oracle and received Oturupon Ika  for the upcoming year.

This odu promises great abundance if elders act with Iwa Pele.

Agbo ato

here is the reading for the year with my commentary

OTURUPON-IKA

During Ifa consultation Ifa foresees the Ire of long life and Prosperity. Ifa advises all Irunmole children to feed Ifa with 2 Kolanuts, 4 Bitter kolas and 1 Guinea fowl. Every one is also expected to serve his/her Ori with 2 Kola nuts and 1 Guinea hen.
After this, please find below the message of Ifa for the year beginning June 3, 2007 – June 2, 2008.

commentary

This odu is what is called very hot meaning it can bring extreme good fortune or extreme bad fortune
depending on how we approach the lessons to be learned. We need to clear our head for two reasons
we need to eliminate all confusion about how to live a healthy live and we need to be careful what we say.
Ika is the power of the word so there would be an implied taboo against foul language.

1. Ifa says that some individuals, groups, communities, nations had once experience prosperity and abundance, but right now there success level had gone down in an unacceptable manner. Ifa says that this was largely due to lack of foresight, mismanagement and lack of proper planning. Ifa says that there is the need for them to learn from the past mistakes and with this there lot will improve tremendously. Ifa says that those concerned will be blessed with free gifts that will be increasing from day to day as long they ensure that past mistakes were not repeated. Ifa advises them to offer ebo with one bearded he-goats, 200 kolanuts, 200 bitter kolas and money. They are also to feed Ifa with 1 matured she-goat.

commentary

For those who live in the United States the economy is on the verge of collapse. The drop in the housing market is simply the first stage of a progression of events that will get worse before they get better. The only solution is to be functional family
The following is the ebo to protect the family from the social problems that will emerge during the next year.

On these, Ifa says-

Oji tuu bi omo onihun
O rinrin gbere-gbere-gbere bi omo onihun
O ji ni kutukutu faso igbosu bose
Dia fun Asiyanbi
Tii somo oloro kan atijo
Ebo ni won ni ko wa se
O gbebo o rubo
Bi igba ba ji
A fowo re moko
Ifa oni ko to ifa ola to nbo
Bi gboro ba ji
A fowo re moko
Ifa oni ko to ifa ola to nbo
Eluulu ko maa ke tuturu
Ifa nla ni yoo wole to mi wa

Translation

He woke up gingerly like the offspring of a successful owner
He walked majestically like the offspring of a successful owner
He woke at dawn and adorned his leg with Igbosu cloth
These were Ifa's declarations to Asiayanbi
The offspring of a successful parent gone by
He was advised to offer ebo
He complied
When the calabash plant wakes up
It will rest its leaves on the farm plants
The free gifts of today is nothing compared to the one coming tomorrow
When gboro leaves wakes up
It will rest its leaves on the farm plants
The free gifts of today is nothing compared to the one coming
tomorrow
Let Eluulu bird ( ) continue to sing
The big free gifts shall continue to enter my home

commentary

This verse is saying that in spite of huge social problems blessings will come from the ancestral mothers
known as iyaami osoranga. In practical terms this means the elder mothers will have the ase to anticipate problems within the family and the guidance needs to be followed especially when they suggest the need to prepare for future problems.

2. Ifa says that some leaders need to offer ebo in order to avoid untimely sudden and untimely death during the year in question. Ifa says that the death of these leaders may create further crises that may extend beyond the year 2008. This is the reason why it is imperative for leaders to offer the ebo as quickly as possible.
Ifa advises those concerned to offer ebo with 1 matured he-goat, the head of the he-goat will be cut and place inside the cap/hat of these leaders. Red pepper, charcoal, kola nuts, bitter kola and palm oil will be added to the ebo inside the cap/hat of these leaders. In order words the cap/hat will be use as the ebo container and will now be placed to cover Esu with all its contents. That is the time that sudden and untimely is eliminated.

commentary

Based on conversations with elders in Ile Ife this verse suggest that elders who are manifesting bad character will be called home to Orun because Orisa wants to open the road to prepare for future difficulties.
Iwa pele is agbo ato meaning good character is the foundation for long life.

On these, Ifa says
Oturupon ka
Oturupon ko
Oturupon koo-koo Koo bi eye so igi
Dia fun Tinyen rere
Tii se Emeso Awodi
Ebo ni won ko waa se
Gbe ikuu mi ra lo o
Awodi gbe ikuu mi ra lo tiyen tiyen rere

Translation
Oturupon ka
Oturupon ko
Oturupon koo-koo Koo bi eye so igi
They cast Ifa Tiyen rere (far far away)
The militant companion of the eagle
He was advised to offer Ebo
Carry my death away
The eagle, please carry death far far away

commentary

It is the ancestral mothers who protect us from death. Being abusive too women is an absolute taboo.

3. Ifa says that a leader is supporting another leader against all wise counseling. These leader had been taking his protégée to every where in order to entrench this protégée. Both of them are deaf to wise counseling.

Commentary

this verse is saying that some of our teachers are basing their guidance on greed and the time for this needs to come to an end.

Ifa says that there is the need for a re-think by these two leaders, because if this is not done immediately, the consequence may be disastrous.
Ifa advises these two people to offer Ebo with 2 matured rams each. One each shall be used as ebo while the second ones shall be used to feed egungun. After this, they need to listen to wise counselling.

Commentary

This means our faith is on the verge of a huge scandal in which inappropriate behavior will be exposed. This has already started to happen and will continue.

On these, Ifa says
Oturupon ka
O pon-on titi
O pon-on dele Alara
Oturupon ka
O pon-on titi
O pon-on dele Ajero
Oturupon ka
O pon-on titi
O pon-on dele Owarangun - Aga
Oturupon ka titi
O pon-on de Okiti-Efon
Oturupon ka
O pon-on titi
O pon-on dele Oloja merindinlogun
A o wo ibi Oturu yoo pon Ika de
Dia fun Alawiifun-ife
Dia fun Alasorofun-igba
Iku pa Awifun ife o
Iku pa Asorofun igba

Translation
Oturu leads Ika
He leads him even to Alara's house
Oturu leads Ika
He leads him even to Ajero's house
Oturu leads Ika
He leads him even to Owarangun Aga's house
Oturu leads Ika
He leads him even to Okiti Efon land
Oturu leads Ika
He leads him even to home of sixteen market leaders
We shall see where Oturu will lead Ika to
These were Ifa's messages to the stubborn person
And to the recalcitrant person
They were advised to offer Ebo
They refused
The stubborn person met his untimely death
And the recalcitrant person died too

commentary

Stubborness means holding on to ibi. This year resistance to growth has dangerous consequences.

4. Ifa warns against holding anything in trust for others in this year. It may be properties, goods, animals or even children.
It is not advisable to keep these items on behalf of others. The reason for this warning is that this item (s) may be lost or dead and the owner may not take kindly to it. Ifa also warns against the fight of the elders of the night. Ifa says that these elders of the night may take advantage of the vulnerability of the items which were kept in trust to inflict a deadly blind on the keepers. Ifa advises us to offer Ebo with 1 he-goat, 2 guinea fowls, 1 axe, 1 cutlass, 1 saw, 1 file and money. He/She should also feed the elders of the night with whatever they request. After this, any item being kept with anybody should be returned to the owner.

Commentary

Ifa says people doing juju are causing disruption in our communities and that we need to be careful not to aggrivate this problem by breaking aggreements.

On these, Ifa says
Oturupon ka
Oturupon Ko
Dia fun Iroko Eluju
Ti n lo gba eran sin lowo Iya mi o
Won ni ko ma gba a sin
O pe Awo lekee
O pe Esu Odara lole
O wona orun yanyan bi eni ti o nii ku mo
Translation
Oturupon ka
Oturupon Ko
They cast Ifa for Iroko in the wilderness
When going to keep iyamis goat in his custody
He was warned against such act
He refused and called Awo a lier
He also labeled Esu a thief
He looked up to the sky as if he would not die anymore

Iroko eluju went for Ifa consultation said was advised by Ifa never to keep anything in his custody on behalf of anybody. He was also advised to offer Ebo of which he refused. Sometime later, the elders of the night came to him to help keep a goat in his custody. He accepted. After sometime, the goat died and he decided to cut it into parts roast and keep for them in case they come to ask for their goat. He also decided that since the intestinal parts including the heart are easily perishable he cooked these and ate. After about three months, the elders of the night came and asked for their goat. He responded that it had died about two months ago. He then showed them the parts such as the four limbs, the chest, the head, the back etc. they told him that was not what they eat in animals except the intestinal, liver and heart. He responded that he had eaten them since he believed they could easily not away. The elders of the night disagreed with him and insisted he must produce those items. Iroko Eluju could not produce these and as a result they decided to cut him down in anger with axe and cutlass. They cut him down and he died.

commentary

this is an extension of the previous verse. Ifa is saying honor all your taboos and embrace good character.

5. Ifa warns against greed and avariciousness all what we do must be with sincerity of purpose. Ifa says that avarice will lead to untold hardship in the coming year. Anything illegal that brings money should also be stopped forthright because it will also bring trouble. All politicians are warned against embezzlement. All community leaders are warned against mis-appropriation of what belongs to he community while those all in change of associations/organization should not abuse the privilege to them. They should offer Ebo while the other one to be used to feed Esu.

Commentary

To me this verse is self evident. Ifa is iwa pele anything else is a lie. Those who embrace the lie will be exposed because divine justice comes to earth through Esu and when that happens negativity is exposed.

On these Ifa says
Oturu pa oka
Ko dele wi
Oturu pa ere
Ko dele wi
Oturu p’oran kan gedegbe
O ranse wale
Dia fun aketan-gbowo
Ti yoo ketan gboran wale
Gbogbo isowo Ope
Eni gbebo nibe ko sebo o

Translation
Oturu killed a cobra
He never informed them at home
Oturu killed a python
He never informed the, at home
But when Oturu encounted enormous trouble
He quickly sent a message home
These were Ifa’s messages to Aketan –gbowo
(He -who -spreads -his -legs to accumulate illicit wealthy)
And who shall also spread his leg to accumulate enormous trouble in his house
All adherents of Ope
Whoever is advised to offer Ebo should comply

6. Ifa also warns against moral crisis especially consequinous intercourse in order to avoid failures and adversities in life. Ifa says that every effort must be made to resist such temptation because of his wealthy consequence.

commentary

Ifa says iwa pele, iwa pele and iwa pele.

Ifa advises us to offer Ebo with 1 he-goat and money. On this Ifa says
Ona le rin, le fidi bakan je
Dia fun won ni Ilado – Areyin
Won nsukun ori awon o fore
Ebo ni won ni ki won se

Translation
It was while you were traveling
That made you commit incest
The Ifa message revealed to the inhabitants of
Ilado- Aseyin
When they were lamenting that their heads
Are bad (riddled with misfortune)
They were advised to offer Ebo

In this Odu, two siblings (brother and sister) were traveling to another town and when it was nightfall
They found a place to sleep. During the midnight, they made love to each other and on the following day, they continue with their journey.
After several years the sister got married and became childless for several years in her matrimonial home. The family also witnessed untold difficulties throughout her married life. The brother on the other hand became the king of the town, but throughout his reign as the Oba, the town was not at peace, prosperity became elusive, infant mortality was on the increase, death rate was higher than birth rate, and epidemic on the loose.
After sometime, Ifa was consulted and it was revealed that a curse was on the town as a result of the actions of some people in the town. Unless and until the curse is removed, the town would continue to continue to witness such crisis.
Ifa says that some leaders had committed some atrocities which had made things so difficult for the inhabitants of the town. They should desist and offer the necessary ebo/etutu in order to bring sanity back to their communities.

commentary

this verse is warning awo who have sex with their omo that the negative consequences of this immoral behavior is about to be exposed. In my opinion this exposure is long over due. This behavior needs to stop
now, end of discussion.

7. Ifa says that there is the need for a town, state, country, group or organization to remove the garment of poverty in the life of people or members of the organization. The garment will be represented with opele seeds and will be worn and be removed unto the Esu icon. The ebo materials include 2 roosters and money. One of the roosters wil be offered to the eldes of the night. Ifa says that once this is done, things wil change for the better.

commentary

Use divination to protect our communities against the coming economic crisis

On this, Ifa says
Afefe lele nii teri oko ba
Efuufu lele nii mi ewe oko jiajia
Dia fun Olomo
Eyi to ti nwewu iya kiri aye
Ebo ni won ni ko waa se
O gbebo, o rubo
Afi igba taa bewu opele l’Esu lorun
La too rire o

Translation
The gentle breze is it that sways the farm leaves
The whirlwind is it that blows the farm leaves turbulently
This was the Ifa cast for Olomo
He who has been wearing the garment of poverty about
He was advised to offer ebo
He complied
Until the time that the garment of poverty was removed unto Esu
That we started witnessing ire.

8. Ifa says that ostentatious living should be reduced to bearest minimum so that we do not labour in vain only for others to benefit from it. All body adornments, 2 pigeons, 2 guinea fowls and money are materials for the ebo.

Commentary

Be thrifty as a way to prepare for the coming economic crisis.

On this, Ifa says
Apon ka
Apon kiri
Awo Esin lo dia fun Esin
Ti nlo ree seso asete
Aboru boye,

Ebo ni won ni ko waa se
Ipin aisebo, egba aiteru
Eyin o rifa Awo ki, Ifa se o

Translation
To carry about
To carry everywhere
The Ifa that was cast for Esin, horse
When going to adorn itself with ornaments that will lead to humiliation
It was advised to offer ebo
The refusal to offer ebo and to heed advice
Have you not seen the revealed Ifa message?
And how it has come to pass.

commentary

Ifa is saying following the quidance of odu this year is essential to survival
